What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files a website can store in your browser. Some are needed for the site to work; others are optional and used for things like advertising. Similar technologies (such as local storage) work in much the same way, and we treat them the same here.
Our approach
Under UK law (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations and UK GDPR), we can use strictly necessary cookies without asking, but we must get your consent before setting any non-essential ones. So:
- Essential cookies are always on — the site can't work without them.
- Advertising cookies are only set if you choose “Accept all”.
Choosing “Essential only” means no advertising cookies are placed.
The cookies we use
| Type | Purpose | Set without consent? |
|---|---|---|
| Your cookie choice | Remembers whether you selected “Essential only” or “Accept all” (stored locally in your browser). | Yes — strictly necessary |
| Security & delivery | Helps our provider (Cloudflare) serve the site securely and protect against abuse. | Yes — strictly necessary |
| Advertising (Google AdSense) | When ads are enabled, Google and its partners may use cookies to show and measure ads. These may be personalised depending on your settings. | No — only after “Accept all” |
Managing cookies
- Use the Change your cookie choices button above at any time.
- Control personalised ads from Google at Google My Ad Center.
- Manage advertising cookies across many sites at Your Online Choices.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings — though note that turning off essential cookies may stop parts of the site working.
